What is the Process for ADHD Testing for My Child?

If you suspect your child might have ADHD, seeking professional help is the first step towards understanding their needs. At Veridian Psychology, we provide comprehensive ADHD testing that helps pinpoint challenges and guides effective treatment plans. But what does the ADHD testing process look like? Here’s a breakdown of what to expect when you begin this journey with your child.

1. Initial Consultation

The process starts with an initial consultation, where Aisling  meets with you (and possibly your child, depending on their age) to discuss current concerns, as well as developmental, learning, social, and medical history. This is a crucial step that helps Aisling  understand your child’s background and the specific challenges they’re facing. During this session, Aisling also answers any questions you may have about ADHD testing and what to expect moving forward.

2. Comprehensive Assessment

The next step is a comprehensive assessment. ADHD testing at Veridian Psychology involves a combination of observations, questionnaires,  standardised tests, and other information designed to evaluate your child’s attention, behaviour, and cognitive abilities. This multi-faceted approach ensures that we get a full picture of your child’s strengths and challenges.

The assessment typically covers:

  • Parent and Teacher Questionnaires: Gathering input from those who know your child best in different settings helps us assess behaviour patterns.
  • Previous reports: Aisling will review recent school reports and any previous assessment reports, e.g., speech and language assessment reports and cognitive assessment reports, as relevant.Behavioral Observations: Aisling  will observe your child’s behaviour during various  tasks.

Cognitive Testing: This assesses your child’s intellectual abilities, processing speed, and memory. This is not necessary in every case but Aisling will advice you if it will be helpful for your child.

3. Review and Diagnosis

Once the assessment is complete, Aisling t will analyse the results and provide a diagnosis, if appropriate. This step involves reviewing all the gathered information to determine whether your child meets the criteria for ADHD. We will also consider other possible explanations for the symptoms to ensure an accurate diagnosis.

4. Personalised Feedback Session

After the diagnosis, we schedule a personalised feedback session with you to discuss the results. During this meeting, we’ll explain the findings, answer any questions you may have, and provide recommendations for treatment and support. If your child is diagnosed with ADHD, We’ll work with you to develop a tailored treatment plan that may include behavioral strategies, therapy, and school accommodations.

Why ADHD Testing Matters

Understanding your child’s needs is key to helping them succeed. ADHD testing provides clarity and opens the door to effective treatment and support. With the right guidance, children with ADHD can overcome challenges and reach their full potential.
